General Lab Usage PDF Print E-mail

The general lab policy applies to any of the machines in the DIP, UDIP, Optics and PC lab in which you log in as student and not your username.  Many of these rules also apply to other machines you log in to as well.  Keep in mind, these machines use a shared account, so an extra step of courtesy is necessary.

  • The account on these machine is not 'your' account, since it is shared between anyone else who uses that computer.  Keep this in mind while using it and please use your best judgement.
  • Data can be saved temporarily on the computer.  Short term storage should be placed on the second partition where applicable.  Keep in mind, however, these machines are wiped on a quarterly basis to provide updates, security fixes and new software.  The second partition is generally wiped once a year.  These machines are not backed up.
  • Generally be courteous to others around you in the lab, such as no loud music without headphones.  Try to keep your area clean and leave it the way you found it.
  • No inapproriate wallpapers, audio, images, etc.  Again, a good judgement call.
  • Absolutely no illegal or inappropriate material.  This includes any pirated software or media.
  • No copying software or music cds.
  • No copyright infringement.
  • No classified/sensitive data.  If you're in a position to have this, you have better suited machines and serves for this.

RIT usage policy applies to these machines as well.  We leave these machines fairly open for use, since the people using them have a wide array of needs.  The biggest rule we can say is just please be courteous and use good judgement when using these computers.
